The Manchester Metropolitan University is hosting its first Northwest Long Nineteenth Century Seminar of 2024, welcoming their visiting international scholar Chiaki Yokoyama from Japan as well as speakers from cultural partners at the Manchester Art Gallery and the Portico Library, including our very own Debbie Challis. This event, timed to celebrate the birthday of Victorian polymath John Ruskin, is the first of a series of events organised by the Long Nineteenth-Century Network to mark the bicentenary of Manchester Metropolitan University.
The three papers to be presented all relate to both education and to Ruskin and his circle, considering the impact of new ways of thinking about art and community in Manchester and London from the 1850s to 1914.
This is an international hybrid event, meaning you can attend either on campus or via Teams. For further information, including dates, times and a booking link, click HERE.
