This extensive article, titled ‘Milesian elite responses to Persia: the Ionian Revolt in context’, applies the concepts of agency (habitus) and postcolonialism to a textual criticism of Herodotus’ narrative of the Ionian Revolt. This is done to understand how the Milesian elite negotiated the social context which resulted in the fateful decision to attack the Persian seat of Sardis and spark the Ionian Revolt.
